Every odor has a physical source — uric acid crystals in a subfloor, nicotine compounds in drywall, mold in insulation. The source releases odor molecules continuously into the air. Treating the air (ozone, air freshener, air purifier) without treating the source produces temporary improvement followed by full return of the odor, because the source keeps releasing.
